The Callisto Protocol Won’t See A Japanese Release

The country's CERO Ratings Board has banned the game for its gory content.

Developer Striking Distance Studios have announced that their upcoming title will not appear on Japanese game stores due to being reluctant to censor its high-level violence in fear of harming the game’s character and integrity, with the following translated Twitter post from the studio stating:

“The Japanese version of The Callisto Protocol has been decided to be discontinued. At present, we have decided that we will not be able to pass the CERO rating, and if we change the content, we will not be able to provide the experience that the player expects. We would appreciate if everyone in Japan can understand this situation. Gamers who have pre-ordered will receive their refunds.”

Although the game will still release here in the West on December 2nd this year as scheduled, losing a major foothold in the Japanese market probably hit a tad too hard. Even so, we’re very eager to live a space horror experience that will definitely deliver.
